Today should be special in two ways, ~ 6 hours of combined there and back and
also this is the home village of our driver Messain. 500 kits to deliver to 500
needy kids. Experience to date indicates that the farther north one goes (Lome
is in the extreme south of the country on the huge Bay of Benin / Atlantic Ocean) the tougher
the go at the village and the longest trip to date @ 143 km each way. Off to breakfast and the dreaded 3hr drive in hot sticky weather!
Loooong drive (3:00 there 4:00 back) with 2 detours, one to a very quiet artisan
market (we were the only customers) followed by a stop at waterfall in the
mountains which was very interesting - much cooler in the mountains - but it is
was well worth the long drive back. Delivered another 500 kits and we are now
1/2 way through the distribution already. Does time fly when occupied? As
mentioned today was the longest run and I can mention that measure of the level
of fatigue is palpable in the absolute silence in the van on the return home; even
with 11 people. Mangos trees are everywhere (school yards, line streets, wild).
It was very green in the more northern section of the country and hilly.
Closing thought at end of day?
Where is the thermostat that controls the
furnace in this place?
Everyone listening to the tribal beats!
A local radio station stopped by for a "mobile" report!
